Community Bulletin Board for the week of January 5th - Sponsored by Klein Bank

A healthier 2009 for residents in and around Buffalo is the goal of the 1st Annual Buffalo Community Health Fair scheduled for Saturday. More than 30 vendors at Saturday's Health Fair, with a wide range of activities, screenings, and prize giveaways. The grand door prize will be the new Wii-Fit software system for the popular Wii video game system. The Health Fair is free and open to the public, and will be held from 10 AM to 2 PM at the Lakeview Mall in downtown Buffalo in the building formerly occupied by Mr. Movies.

Thursday: Monticello at K-mart

Van hours are from 2-6 pm on weekdays. Services provided include adult and child immunizations, child car seat safety checks, screening for high blood pressure, diabetes and cholesterol, information about pregnancy, family planning, healthy lifestyles and more. There is a $30 charge for cholesterol testing. To schedule an appointment in advance, telephone 763-682-7717 or toll free 1-800-362-3667. For immunizations, please bring past immunization records to the van, if they are available.

Annandale Christian Women's Club invites area women to join them for Sew and Tell brunch at 9:30 am on Thursday, January 8 in Reichel's Event Center. Feature guest is Patty Knight of Annandale Embroidery; music is by Jodi Sellers of Lakeville. Invite your friends and make reservations by calling 320-274-8741 or 320-274-5395. Child care is also available at $1 per Mom with a reservation.

"Bug Show" featuring Bruce the bug guy will held on Sunday January 18th at Ney Park and Nature Center. The "Bug Show" is a unique hands-on program that features a wide assortment of living and preserved insects and related bugs. Pre-registration is required by January 9th and the cost of the class is 5 dollars per person. Maximum class size is 35 and to pre-register call the Wright County Parks Office at 763-682-7693

Adults and teens interested in learning knitting basics are invited to attend knitting 101 Saturdays from 10:30 to noon at the Delano Public Library. The program will be presented by Sharon Verchota and will also discuss equipment, pattern reading and project selection. The attendance limit is 6 and pre-registration is required. A benefit lunch for Richard "Dick" Schwirtz will be held on Sunday January 11th from 10 AM to 2 PM at Plato Hall. Dick suffered seizures in 2006 and was diagnosed with a tumor in his head in 2007, and after several hospitalizations and surgeries in 2008 Dick returned home on December 5th. Proceeds of the benefit will go toward handicap equipment. The cost of the benefit is a free will offering, and supplemental funds will be provided by Thrivent Financial. A girl scout pancake breakfast fund raiser will be held on Sunday January 11th from 9 AM to 1 PM at the Montrose Community Center. The breakfast features unlimited pancakes, with two sausage links, orange and apple juice, coffee and water. Cost of the Breakfast is six dollars for adults, seniors over 60 five dollars and kids age two to ten three dollars. In addition to the breakfast there will be a bake sale with fresh lefsa, brownies and breads.

Area women are invited to join the Buffalo Women's Connection on Tuesday, January 13th at 7 PM in the Buffalo American Legion Club on 304 Tenth Avenue in Buffalo. The theme for the evening will be "Beginning a Beautiful Year," and will feature the owners of CURVES in Buffalo, along with public health nurse Helene Kahlstorf. Along with the speakers there will also be a beef stew dinner with oriental cabbage salad, buns, milk, coffee and carrot cake bars. Cost of the event is 7.50 all inclusive. Reservations are necessary and must be made before January 11th. To register call Jewell at 763-682-1780.

Wright County Community Action is offering no-cost, confidential mortgage foreclosure counseling. With mortgage foreclosures at a very high level in Wright county, many homeowners do not realize there are things that can be done to stop or prevent going through foreclosure. Wright County Community Action will help homeowners understand their options, work with them and work with the lender to try and prevent foreclosure. For more information, telephone 320-963-6500.
